Glaucoma Diagnosis & Co-management, Winston-Salem, NC

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that can cause permanent vision loss and even blindness. It affects the optic nerve, which sends visual messages from the eye to the brain. Our eye doctors at IdealEyes in Winston-Salem can diagnose glaucoma during your regular eye exam. It’s crucial to detect and treat glaucoma early to prevent vision loss. Once eyesight is lost to glaucoma, it can’t be restored. At IdealEyes, we use the latest and most advanced to detect glaucoma in its early stages:

Zeiss Humphrey Field Analyzer 3

Glaucoma doesn’t show any symptoms at first, which is why it’s called the “silent thief of sight.” Over time, it starts to affect your peripheral or side vision. Visual field testing is a method we use for measuring peripheral vision loss.

At IdealEyes, we use the cutting-edge Zeiss Humphrey Field Analyzer 3 with a liquid lens for visual testing. This advanced system helps us identify glaucoma-related visual field changes in less than three minutes per eye on average. During the test, you sit in front of the machine and look straight ahead while a series of small, faint flashes of light appear in your peripheral vision. Each time you see one of these flashes, you press a button. These responses help us create a map of your visual field and spot any signs of peripheral vision loss caused by glaucoma.

ICare tonometry – no “puff of air”!

In addition to visual field testing, a tonometry test is also important for detecting glaucoma. This test measures the pressure inside the eye. High eye pressure is one of the leading risk factors for developing glaucoma. Many people dread the “puff of air” test when going to the eye doctor, but you don’t need to worry about that at IdealEyes because we offer iCare tonometry. It’s faster, more accurate, and there’s no need for a puff of air or anesthetic eye drops.

Glaucoma treatment & surgery co-management

While there’s no cure for glaucoma, early treatment can help slow down or reduce its negative effects. If glaucoma is detected, our eye doctor will work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. If surgery is necessary, we’ll refer you to an ophthalmologist in the area and schedule follow-up visits to monitor your recovery after the procedure.
